Denial of Plot to Oust IGP

The allegations of a secret plot to oust the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, before the Government has vehemently denied the 2024 general elections.

Recently, a leaked recording has emerged, revealing a conspiracy involving a senior police officer and a New Patriotic Party member intending to remove the IGP.

The underlying motive behind this scheme is concerns that Dr. Dampare might hinder attempts to manipulate the outcome of the 2024 elections.

In response to these accusations, the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, addressed the press in Parliament on Tuesday, dismissing the claims and urging the public to disregard them as unsubstantiated and without foundation.

He firmly asserted there is no such plot against the Inspector General of Police, emphasizing the crucial role of preserving the integrity and independence of the police force during the electoral process.

“While tapes can be relevant in the context of a crime, they hold no value in this situation. However, I have not yet determined whether any criminal activity occurred. Let me be obvious: this Government has no intention of interfering with the 2024 elections. The president is committed to abiding by the constitutional term limits and ensuring a free and fair election,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has urged the Government to investigate the leaked recording, which suggests a government agenda to rig the upcoming General Elections following the planned removal of IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Speaking to journalists, James Agalga, the Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, highlighted that such comments could be construed as treasonous, underscoring the urgency for the Government to take immediate action to address the matter.
