Deputy Defence Minister: Bawku security agencies will bring the situation under control

All security agencies in Bawku are working to restore peace, according to Deputy Defence Minister Kofi Amankwa-Manu.

In order to contain the situation, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), which consists of members of Ghana’s Armed Forces, police service, and National Investigation Bureau (NIB), is collaborating.

I can assure you that all security agencies work together. There is a collaboration among all security agencies. The NIB, the military, and the Police are all doing their part, so we must continue to deepen that,” he assured.
He made the assurance during a Sunday discussion on JoyNews’ The Probe.

The topic for discussion was “The Lingering Bawku crisis and alleged military killings.”

The Deputy Defence Minister however noted that to be able to put an end to the recurrent conflict in Bawku, residents must be willing to collaborate with the security forces. “Intelligence is key and trust is also key. And then if we can do that and the people can sit together to discuss issues, I believe we can get somewhere with this.”

A military officer believed to have killed ten Bawku residents on February 2 has been accused of killing ten residents of Bawku.

In his remarks, Stephen Yakubu, Regional Minister and Chairman of the Security Council referred to the incident as regrettable.

There have been a number of violent attacks in the area, according to a release issued by GAF’s Director of Public Relations. The soldiers neutralized six armed men after engaging a group of armed men.

We are very saddened by the loss of those lives. This prompted the Council to seek information about the incident. “These problems in Bawku are taking too long to resolve,” he said. But Mahama Ayariga says he will seek justice for his constituents who were killed by the military. Despite the defence by the military, he stated in an interview on Newsfile on Saturday that he is determined to get to the root of the matter.
