Dome market women voice their dissatisfaction towards incumbent MP

Several market women at Dome market have voiced their discontent with the incumbent Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, through a chorus of boos and jeers during her recent visit.

The MP, who had been absent from her constituency and parliamentary responsibilities for over a year, encountered strong disapproval from her constituents as she attempted to reconnect with them.

A widely circulated video on social media captures Adwoa Safo’s attempt to interact with the market women, offering a friendly handshake. However, her efforts were drowned out by the cacophony of people hooting, shouting, and clapping to convey their dissatisfaction. Some of the market women could be heard shouting, “Adwoa Safo, we demand change!” and “Adwoa Safo, we no longer support you!”

Despite the fervent chants of disapproval, the former Minister for Gender and Social Protection pressed on and continued her duties by engaging with other traders who extended their hands to greet her.

Adwoa Safo’s prolonged absence from parliament in 2022 sparked significant controversy. She left the country in November 2021 and repeatedly failed to appear before the Privileges Committee when summoned to explain her absence. The committee eventually recommended that her seat be declared vacant, but the Speaker of Parliament ruled that the report was not final and needed to be presented to the entire House for a decision.

Adwoa Safo recently issued an apology to the President and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the controversies she caused during her extended absence from parliamentary duties.
