Domelevo celebrates court ruling as a very big birthday present

Former Auditor-General Mr. Daniel Domelevo expressed his happiness and gratitude following a Supreme Court ruling that deemed it unconstitutional for the President to force him to take leave and appoint an acting Auditor-General while in office. Mr. Domelevo stated the ruling vindicates him and ensures that no future sitting President will similarly breach the constitution. He had previously argued that the President did not have the authority to appoint an acting Auditor-General when unhappy with the incumbent.

The Supreme Court’s decision came after civil society groups sued the Attorney General over the President’s directive. The court declared the direction and appointment unconstitutional but did not issue any other orders since Mr. Domelevo had already retired. Mr. Domelevo welcomed the ruling, stating that it sets a clear rule for future presidents and prevents the abuse of power over independent officeholders.
