Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang the Vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has cautioned trainee nurses and midwives not to be swayed by short-term promises from the current government.
Speaking to students at Essiama Nursing and Midwifery Training College and Asanta SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training School in the Ellembele Constituency during the second phase of her three-day campaign tour in the Western Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged the students to prioritize long-term plans for their future over temporary incentives intended to secure votes.
Referencing the challenges faced by the two training institutions, she questioned the government’s spending priorities. “Why aren’t they using the funds to build the male hostel? Have they forgotten that the lecturers have no accommodation? Have they forgotten you need a skills lab?” she asked, adding, “They’ll give you some mobile money to vote for them, and the projects will still be left unfinished.”
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the NDC’s commitment to healthcare under former President John Dramani Mahama, stating that their administration implemented strong policies and made significant investments in the health sector. She pointed out that many health facilities across the country were upgraded and new hospitals were built, creating more opportunities for nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals.
She emphasized that the NDC not only prioritizes the interests of health professionals but also places young people at the center of its policies, recognizing and rewarding them for their contributions. She urged the students to make a wise choice in the upcoming December 7, 2024, elections by voting for John Dramani Mahama, reminding them of the NDC’s achievements in healthcare.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang concluded by stating that the current government has failed to deliver on its promises in the health sector, leaving many essential projects abandoned.
