According to a statement by the government, a group of unidentified assailants attacked a detachment of six soldiers and 34 civilian volunteers in northern Burkina Faso, near Aorema village, resulting in the death of 40 people and leaving 33 others injured.

The attack occurred on Saturday and was carried out by armed men who had not been identified. The Ouahigouya governorate reported that the region where the attack occurred is close to the Mali border, which has been overrun by fighters affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIS, who have been conducting repeated attacks for several years.

A security source reported that several dozen terrorists were neutralized (killed) in a counter-attack launched after the incident. The injured were stable at the regional capital, Ouahigouya’s university hospital.

Last week, “armed terrorist groups attacked two villages in the northeast of Burkina Faso, close,” resulting in the death of 44 civilians. Since 2015, violence has plagued the country, resulting in the deaths of over 10,000 people and the displacement of two million others from their homes.

The current military government declared a “general mobilization” to provide the state with “all necessary means” to combat the attacks blamed on fighters linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS. The government had already announced plans to recruit 5,000 soldiers by September 2022.
