Minister Fatimatu Abubakar has responded to claims made by the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, regarding the financing of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP). Mahama had alleged that the government had only made a 15 percent down payment from a loan secured for the initiative.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Tamale on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Abubakar clarified that the government did not take out a loan for DRIP but instead used the District Assembly Common Fund to finance the project.
“This is an initiative of President Akufo-Addo, his legacy, and a programme fully funded by his government. If anyone tries to claim, for political reasons, that a loan was contracted and we’ve only paid 15 percent, let them understand that the District Assembly’s Common Fund, a statutory fund without political bias, was used to finance the DRIP initiative,” she explained.
Launched on July 31, 2024, by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, DRIP is aimed at improving road infrastructure in metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies, enhancing connectivity, and boosting economic growth.
