Drivers engaged during African Games urge government to pay them

Drivers who worked during the African Games in Ghana are urging the government to pay their outstanding fees.

The games, hosted for the first time in Ghana, saw participation from over 50 nations, with more than 400 drivers employed to transport athletes and media personnel to various venues.

However, two months after the games concluded, the drivers have yet to receive their payments.

Kelvin Newman, one of the drivers, expressed his frustration  that all attempts to secure their payments have been unsuccessful.

“I have been to Parliament on several occasions, but with no positive results. We worked for the money, and they need to pay us,” he said.

The drivers are now threatening to take further action if they do not receive their payments soon.

This situation has raised concerns about the treatment of workers and the organization of major events in Ghana.

The government has not yet commented on the matter.

The 13th edition of the African Games was held in Accra, Ghana, from August 4 to 19, 2023.

This edition of the African Games featured athletes from 54 countries competing in 22 sports disciplines, with seven sports codes serving as qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
