EC to print ballot papers after statistics are shared

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has addressed concerns surrounding the printing of ballot papers for the upcoming 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

In a statement released on October 10, the EC’s Deputy Chairman for Operations, Samuel Tettey, clarified that the printing of Notices of Poll will commence on Friday, October 11, 2024. However, the printing of ballot papers will only begin after the commission has provided ballot statistics to candidates, political parties, and printing houses.

“We would like to assure the general public that the printing of ballot papers has not yet commenced,” the statement emphasized.

This clarification follows accusations from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which raised concerns about potential manipulation and electoral malpractice. The NDC had expressed apprehension over the EC’s plans to print ballot papers without first releasing a certified voter register or providing accurate ballot statistics.

In response, the Electoral Commission reiterated its commitment to upholding established practices, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.

“As has always been the case, the Commission will provide ballot statistics to candidates, political parties, and all printing houses before the printing of ballot papers begins,” the EC assured.

The commission also called on the public and stakeholders to trust in its ability to deliver transparent, credible, free, and fair elections in December 2024.
