Seasoned lawyer Efua Ghartey has made history as the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), marking a major milestone for the organization.
In a closely contested election held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ms. Ghartey received 1,208 votes, defeating her opponent Kwadzo Dzakpasu, who garnered 1,060 votes.
This victory follows two previous attempts by Ms. Ghartey to lead the Association, where she narrowly lost to Tony Forson and Yaw Boafo.
With over two decades of experience in law, Ms. Ghartey has vowed to champion the interests of legal professionals, uphold the rule of law, and advance justice in Ghana.
In her acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude, saying, “I am humbled and honored to be the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association… We shall make you proud. We shall make sure that you never regret this choice.”
Her election has been widely praised as a breakthrough for women in Ghana’s legal profession. She will officially take office on Monday, November 4, 2024.
Outgoing GBA President Yaw Boafo extended his congratulations, stating that the GBA is “proud to have Efua Ghartey as its first female President” and looks forward to collaborating with her to achieve the Association’s objectives.
