Electoral Commission of Ghana refutes allegations

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has refuted allegations made in two videos circulating on social media, claiming that the Commission is conducting voter registration and transfer of votes exercises.

In a statement signed by Mr. Fuller Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation, the EC described the allegations as “false” and “calculated mischief” aimed at tarnishing its image.

“The Commission states categorically that both allegations are false. The Limited Voter Registration Exercise ended on May 29, 2024, and the Application for Transfer of Votes ended on June 14, 2024, with an extension for students, prisoners, and security personnel from July 3 to 5, 2024,” the statement explained.

The EC emphasized that all Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits used for the exercises were deactivated and lodged at the Legon Police Station, making it impossible for the alleged registration and transfer of votes to have taken place.

“The video provides no evidence, shows no images of registration kits or materials, and does not feature any EC official. We urge the public to disregard these dangerous allegations and call on the Ghana Police Service to arrest and prosecute those behind these fabrications,” the statement added.

The EC reiterated its commitment to transparency, credibility, and peaceful electoral processes, urging stakeholders, especially political parties, to avoid propagating falsehoods that could undermine state institutions and destabilize the nation.

“We remain focused on delivering a transparent and credible electoral process. We urge all to join us in this endeavor,” the EC assured.
