Samuel Atta Akyea, the Chairman of the Energy Committee of Parliament, has revealed that President Akufo-Addo has instructed the Volta River Authority to scale back the export of electricity to neighboring nations in response to the ongoing intermittent power outages, colloquially known as ‘dumsor’.
“The President is actively addressing the situation, and I have been informed that there is a directive to reduce our electricity exports to other countries. The President prioritizes the national interest over foreign profits, which will contribute positively to our situation,” he stated in an interview with Joy News.
Ghanaians have been grappling with irregular electricity supply recently, causing disruptions across various sectors and inconveniences for consumers.
The President’s directive comes in the wake of recent calls by Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Power Generators, Ghana (IPGG), for the Volta River Authority (VRA) to suspend electricity exports and focus on meeting domestic demands amidst the current power crisis. IPGG argued that Ghana is currently facing a power crisis, necessitating VRA to limit the export of hydro-generated electricity to neighboring countries where consumers enjoy significantly lower power tariffs.
Mr. Apetorgbor emphasized the importance of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority refraining from imposing high electricity tariffs on Ghanaians, especially during periods of unstable power supply.
