Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader, expressed his concerns about the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Ghanaian Parliament, and the nation’s democracy in light of the departure of numerous experienced members of parliament.
“The longer a person stays in parliament, the better the performance of that person,” stated the Suame MP, who voluntarily opted out of this year’s race, in an interview with GTV.
He emphasized that an MP’s tenure in the legislature contributes positively to the parliament, the MP’s party, and Ghana’s democracy.
“That’s why what is happening certainly cannot be good,” lamented Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, referring to the defeat of 28 NPP MPs in the governing party’s parliamentary primaries and 16 in the main opposition National Democratic Congress’ primaries.
“I think that the parties, especially NPP and NDC, need to engage in serious introspection about this constant turnover of MPs,” he added.
In addition to Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, seventeen other sitting NPP MPs chose not to run for office.
