A fire outbreak in sections of the Dome market has destroyed at least fifty (50) shops. The incident, which occurred late on Sunday, January 7, 2024, affected various structures around 9:30 pm.

According to ADOII Alex Nartey from the Public Relations Department at the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Headquarters, the cause of the fire is currently unknown and is under investigation. He highlighted the challenges faced during the operation, citing congestion in the market as a hindrance to effective assistance. Despite these obstacles, the fire was successfully extinguished.

Nartey noted, “There was a lot of obstruction. Lack of accessibility was a big challenge for our work.” He explained that the congested market made it difficult for their appliances to reach the fire scene promptly. Nevertheless, they managed to control the situation from 9:30 pm to 3:30 am, preventing any casualties.

While about $500 worth of properties were saved from destruction, approximately 50 shops fell victim to the incident. Nartey urged the government and local authorities in the Dome and its surroundings to prioritize fire safety, emphasizing the absence of fire stations in the community.

He stated, “This is a call to the assemblies there to prioritize fire safety because the unfortunate thing is that there is not a single fire station in this area; Dome and Taifa area.” Nartey emphasized that the establishment of a fire station in the region would lead to quicker response times and help prevent such losses in the future.
