Fire guts a popular drinking spot

A fire outbreak has destroyed eight shops, including a popular drinking spot, in Assin Fosu, Central Region, resulting in the loss of properties worth several thousands of Ghana cedis.

The fire, which broke out on Wednesday afternoon, took firefighters over two hours to bring under control.

The affected shops included a printing press, restaurant, pub, and dressmaking shop. Items such as printing equipment, sound systems, sewing machines, clothes, refrigerators, drinks, and other goods were consumed by the fire.

Although the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, a gas cylinder and a fire extinguisher were found at the scene.

DOIII Paul Tawiah, Assin Fosu Municipal Fire Officer, attributed the challenges faced by firefighters to the lack of a fire hydrant in the area.

He appealed to the Ghana Water Company and the Assin Fosu Municipal Assembly to install fire hydrants at strategic points in Assin Fosu as a proactive measure.
