Africa’s trailblazing hip-hop artist M.anifest has joined forces with Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Flea and Nigerian highlife fusion band The Cavemen for his latest single, “Puff Puff.”

The collaboration originated from a casual conversation between M.anifest and The Cavemen at his Manifestivities music festival in Accra two years ago. The idea evolved naturally, with M.anifest and The Cavemen later reconnecting in Lagos to develop the track. M.anifest then teamed up with Flea in Los Angeles, where their shared love for jazz, books, and legendary drummer Tony Allen led to an unexpected but brilliant trumpet solo from Flea, despite his iconic status as one of the greatest bassists of all time. The result is “Puff Puff,” a dynamic fusion of three distinct musical styles.

Produced by Budo (known for his work with Doja Cat, Lil Yachty, and Macklemore) and The Cavemen, “Puff Puff” is a vibrant anthem blending hip-hop, jazz, and highlife into a celebration of life and music. The song reflects on life’s struggles and the resilience needed to overcome them, with M.anifest delivering raw and honest insights into the pressures of daily life while encouraging perseverance.

The Cavemen’s melodic hook, “Puff puff pass, keep the fire burning,” serves as a metaphor for sharing strength, wisdom, and resilience in the face of challenges. Flea’s soulful trumpet solo adds depth and emotion to the track, complementing the reflective lyrics while maintaining the song’s laid-back, uplifting energy.
