Flights grounded since the start of the strike in Kenya

Flights have remained grounded since the start of the strike, which began in protest of the government’s build-and-operate agreement with India’s Adani Group. Under the deal, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is set to undergo renovations, including the construction of an additional runway and terminal, in exchange for the Adani Group managing the airport for 30 years.

The Kenya Airport Workers Union, which initiated the strike, argues that the deal will result in job losses and “inferior terms and conditions of service” for those who remain employed. Kenya Airways has already warned of flight delays and possible cancellations due to the ongoing disruptions at the Nairobi-based airport.

The strike follows a previous threat by airport workers last week, which was postponed pending further discussions with the government. However, tensions escalated when reports surfaced of unknown individuals moving around with airport officials, taking notes and photographs, raising concerns that Adani Group representatives were preparing to implement the deal.

On Monday, the High Court temporarily halted the agreement’s implementation following a case filed by the Law Society and the Kenya Human Rights Commission. The court’s decision will stand until the case is heard.
