Approximately 3,000 individuals residing in around 20 communities within the Ketu South Municipality have been displaced by incessant rains lasting three weeks, forcing them to inhabit their waterlogged rooms due to the lack of alternative shelter options.
This distressing situation has brought all economic activities in the area to a halt, effectively trapping the people in their homes with no foreseeable relief in sight.
As a result, five elementary schools have been temporarily closed down as their classrooms have become submerged in water.
Regrettably, there are currently no immediate relief supplies available for the flood victims, as stated by Torgbi Alossode, the Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation, during an interview with Alberto Mario Noretti from Graphic Online on Monday morning, June 12. Alossode added they are assessing the extent of the damage before helping those displaced. The areas most severely affected include Agbawema, Ahiatakukope, Awakorme, Hastukope, Akame, Lokove, Ahorfe, Dzisakope, Yegbefume (near Agbozume), and certain communities in Klikor.
Meanwhile, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu South, has called for an immediate closure of all schools in the municipality to ensure the safety of the children. Gomashie explained that the roads leading to these schools, which are not paved, are now submerged in large volumes of water, posing a significant danger.
The MP has urged the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to fulfill its responsibility promptly and address the current situation. The Municipal Chief Executive, Maxwell Lugudor, revealed that the flooding in Agbozume and Klikor resulted from lagoons overflowing their banks. In response, the local government plans to dredge the lagoons as an immediate solution to the problem. They intend to construct small dams in certain border communities, in the long run, to serve as reservoirs during floods.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported thus far in relation to the floods.
