The food suppliers expressed discontent with the government’s lack of communication regarding the outstanding arrears owed them for two years. The Association stated that if the government fails to settle the arrears, it will take legal action to ensure payment by Friday, June 16, 2023.
Starting Tuesday, June 13, 2023, the Food Suppliers plan to conduct picketing at the National Food Buffer Stock Company premises to receive the overdue payments.
Despite their persistent attempts, the Association has been unsuccessful in persuading the government to pay the amount of over GH¢200 million owed to its members.
Kwaku Amedume, a spokesperson for the Association, informed Citi TV that empty promises from the government would no longer sway the members.
Amedume explained that the value of the money owed by the Buffer Stock Company has depreciated over time, emphasizing that the only viable solution is to start legal proceedings. He stated, “We will be taking the government to court because they have held the money owed to us for two years with no interest. Hence, we will seek interest on the overdue amount, considering the significant expenses incurred in pursuing this payment. Our lawyers will determine the compensation and damages to request.”
