Former President John Dramani Mahama has made an impassioned plea to the people of Ghana, urging them to abide by the rule of law and refrain from entertaining any notions of supporting a potential coup d’état in the country. This appeal comes as a strategic response to the comments made by the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who suggested that Ghana is teetering on the brink of a coup d’état following a public altercation.
In a recent interview with Joy News, the NDC Chairman stated, “Ghana is more than ripe for a coup d’état, but the only thing that is saving us is the tolerance of Ghanaians. If you look at our history, you will see that the things that have led to previous coup d’états in this country were even less severe than what is happening now. But the only thing that is saving us is the tolerance and our shared history.”
Mr. Nketiah contended that Ghana’s exceptional tolerance among its citizens is the key factor preventing a descent into complete chaos.
He further explained that while there may be situations that people dislike and might be tempted to consider disruptive actions, such actions would offer only temporary relief and could lead to new leaders who are equally unyielding. He emphasized the importance of Ghanaians’ understanding of their nation’s history, particularly its troubled past marked by numerous coups triggered by less serious circumstances.
Addressing a gathering in Kumasi at the 3rd National Conference of Imams and Regional Imams of Ghana, Mr. Mahama stressed that, despite the current economic challenges facing the nation, the thought of orchestrating a coup should not even be considered as a last resort.
“We should be aware that regardless of the hardships, there will be an opportunity for elections where different individuals can be elected. We are only a year away from bidding farewell to some leaders and welcoming others who may have solutions to the economic challenges. Therefore, let us continue to respect the Constitution. We must never entertain thoughts of coups, as adhering to democratic processes is the path to resolving our issues,” Mahama emphasized.
