Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has firmly rejected claims that Freemasonry is an occult organization, insisting that the fraternity is deeply rooted in Christian principles and values.
Speaking on JoyNews on Sunday, February 2, Afenyo-Markin defended Freemasonry amid growing public scrutiny following his questioning of George Opare Addo’s membership during a vetting session. The discussion quickly gained traction on social media, with some labeling Freemasonry as a secretive and cult-like organization.
However, Afenyo-Markin dismissed these assertions, emphasizing that Christianity is at the core of Masonic teachings.
“So, I’m telling you that this Rose Choir, Perfection Stage, the highest level of Masonry, is all about the New Testament and Christ, the teachings of Christ. It speaks of the sacrifices Christ made. And it is therefore reprehensible for anybody to say that Freemasonry is an occult society,” he stated.
His remarks come at a time when the debate over Freemasonry’s compatibility with Christianity has resurfaced. Recently, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra reaffirmed its long-standing position that Catholics cannot be Freemasons without contradicting Church doctrine.
In a statement dated January 27, signed by Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, the Church stated unequivocally: “You cannot be a true Catholic and a Freemason at the same time.”
