GACL denies luggage fumigation charge

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has denied media reports suggesting airlines were pressured to implement a $7 charge on passengers for luggage fumigation when flying in and out of Ghana.
According to some media reports, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) proposed this new charge during a meeting held on Thursday, June 22, 2023, in Accra, which was allegedly conveyed to airlines operating at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

However, in a press release issued on Monday, June 26, 2023, the GACL management refuted any involvement in the decision to impose luggage charges or fees on international passenger tickets.

The press release stated, “The GACL Board and Management have taken note of various media reports regarding a proposed tax/charge of $7 for luggage fumigation that the GACL allegedly intends to impose on passengers. The GACL wants to reassure the public that no such taxes or charges will be imposed for luggage fumigation purposes, as reported. Therefore, any contrary reports should be disregarded.”
