Galamsey issue poses greater danger

Dr. Randy Abbey, host of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, has voiced his deep frustration over the ineffective efforts to tackle illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in the country.

During the September 3 edition of his show, Dr. Abbey highlighted the leadership’s indifferent attitude toward the issue, describing it as a glaring indicator of the nation’s decline.

“We are pretending that we are not a failed state,” Dr. Abbey stated.

He further emphasized that while the threat of terrorism and the funds allocated to counter it are significant from a national security perspective, the galamsey issue poses an even greater danger. He argued that the persistence of galamsey is fueled by a lack of leadership and widespread greed.

“It’s as if there is no leadership; I don’t understand how people can call themselves leaders when we see such levels of impunity and moral decay. The greed in this country is so shocking, even Lucifer would be astonished,” Dr. Abbey remarked.

His comments follow serious concerns raised by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) regarding the impact of illegal mining on the Pra River. The company has reported that galamsey is severely disrupting water supply in the Central Region, including Cape Coast, Elmina, and nearby areas, leaving residents without water for extended periods.
