The Volta River Authority (VRA) has revealed that it has expended more than GH¢20 million on relief supplies for residents impacted by the Akosombo Dam spillage. This sum was allocated for the purchase of essential items such as foodstuffs, mattresses, and medical supplies.

Engineer Ken Arthur, a Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the VRA, emphasized the organization’s commitment to ameliorating the conditions of the over 36,000 individuals affected by the spill.

He stated, “VRA has also allocated GH¢20 million to mitigate the adverse effects on the affected communities due to the unavoidable release of excess water from the Akosombo Dam. We want to assure the public that VRA will continue to monitor the situation and provide the necessary support in collaboration with NADMO [National Disaster Management Organisation] and other relevant agencies to ensure the well-being of the affected communities. We reiterate that no one will be left behind in this emergency situation.”

Engineer Ken Arthur also refuted claims that the VRA had failed to adequately inform residents about the spillage in advance.

“We took all the necessary steps to ensure that the Dam’s structural integrity was not compromised, and we had all the emergency preparedness protocols in place to alert potentially affected individuals before the spill event commenced. I can confidently say that this is why we have not recorded any casualties, as individuals at risk had ample time to relocate from hazardous areas.”
