Ghana has attained Tier 1 status in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), marking its position as a global leader in cybersecurity.
Tier 1, the highest rank in the index, is awarded to nations that demonstrate exemplary cybersecurity practices and serve as role models for others.
According to the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), Ghana achieved a score of 99.27%, a testament to its advanced cybersecurity framework. This positions Ghana as a leader in Africa, second only to Mauritius. The score reflects significant progress across key areas, including Legal, Technical, Organizational, Capacity Building, and Cooperation, compared to its 2020 ranking of 86.69%.
Notable achievements include the enactment of the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), the licensing of cybersecurity professionals, and enhanced protection of critical digital infrastructure.
Ghana has also improved coordination between the public and private sectors through initiatives like the Joint Cybersecurity Committee. Internationally, Ghana has become a hub for cybersecurity training and collaboration, hosting global capacity-building programs with partners such as the EU, World Bank, and ECOWAS.
These efforts highlight Ghana’s dedication to securing its digital ecosystem and its role as a benchmark for cybersecurity excellence.
