Ghana has reached Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire, for the 34th edition of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote D’Ivoire 2023 after departing Kumasi on Wednesday morning. The team covered the 40-minute journey via Air Cote D’Ivoire, the official airline partner of the tournament.

Upon arrival, the team was warmly welcomed by a cultural troupe, accompanied by vibrant drumming and dancing, featuring traditional Akan elements such as kete, fontomfrom, and adowa – a royal court dance-drumming originating from the Akan people of Ghana.

The players were attired in various shades of Kente, worn over white short-sleeved Kaftan. Kaftan, inherited by cultures across Asia, was historically worn in Russia, Southwest Asia, Northern Africa, and Eastern Europe. The styles, uses, and names of the kaftan vary across different cultures. In contrast, Kente, traditionally originating from Bonwire in the Ashanti region of Ghana, refers to a textile made from handwoven cloth, strips of silk, and cotton.

In contemporary Ghana, the wearing of Kente cloth has become widespread, especially during special occasions, with highly sought-after Kente brands led by master weavers. Additionally, Kente is also worn by the Ewe and Akan people in parts of Togo and Ivory Coast. The team, consisting of 27 players, will soon undergo their first training session in Abidjan as they gear up for the upcoming tournament.

The players making the trip to Abidjan include Richard Ofori, Joseph Wollacott, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Alidu Seidu, Denis Odoi, Kingsley Schindler, Gideon Mensah, Abdul Fatawu Hamid, Nicholas Opoku, and Salisu Mohammed. Others on the roster are Daniel Amartey, Alexander Djiku, Baba Iddrisu, Elisha Owusu, Abdul Samed Salis, Richmond Lam
