John Dumelo, a Ghanaian actor and politician, has called on his fellow Ghanaians to express their outrage over the rampant illegal mining, known as galamsey, that is devastating the country’s water bodies. He warned that if this issue is not addressed, Ghana may have to import food and water as these resources will be depleted due to pollution caused by illegal mining activities.
Dumelo emphasized that the consequences of galamsey will also impact Ghana’s position as the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, as the chemicals used in illegal mining contaminate farmlands. “If we don’t take action against this galamsey menace, we’ll lose our place as the second largest cocoa producer in the world,” he stated on Twitter. We’ll start importing food if we don’t stop destroying our farmland. The few remaining farms will be soaked in chemicals. We’ll begin importing drinking water.”
These concerns raised by Dumelo echo those of Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, a former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, who has claimed that some high-ranking government officials are involved in galamsey, including those in the government seat at Jubilee House.
