The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has strongly criticized Ghana’s political culture, accusing politicians of prioritizing self-interest over the welfare of the nation.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, June 7, Prof. Gyampo lamented what he described as a prevailing “politics of convenience,” where insincere political actors act based on personal or partisan gain rather than national interest.
He specifically questioned the selective outrage among political leaders, citing the recent demonstration by the Minority Caucus in Parliament, led by Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, which called for the release of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (popularly known as Chairman Wontumi), who is facing fraud-related charges.
“What really bothers me,” Prof. Gyampo wrote, “is the glaring double standard. Why demonstrate for Wontumi and remain silent on Ken Ofori-Atta?”
Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is currently the subject of an INTERPOL Red Notice over allegations of corruption. He is officially listed on INTERPOL’s website as “Wanted” for allegedly using his public office for personal profit.
This follows a move by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which declared Ofori-Atta wanted after he failed to appear for a scheduled interrogation on June 2. The OSP subsequently initiated the process to place him on the Red Notice list, with extradition proceedings already underway to secure his return to Ghana.
Ofori-Atta is under investigation for his alleged role in multiple high-profile cases. These include questionable contractual arrangements between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) regarding petroleum and mineral revenue assurance.
He also faces accusations involving the unlawful termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), as well as irregularities in procurement and financing related to the construction of the National Cathedral.
Additionally, the former minister is being investigated for suspected corruption in a Ministry of Health deal with Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for ambulance supply and maintenance, and for the alleged mismanagement of funds from the GRA’s Tax P-Fund Account.
The INTERPOL Red Notice facilitates global law enforcement cooperation in locating and arresting Ofori-Atta for extradition to face legal proceedings in Ghana.
