Ghana’s High Commission in Kenya has confirmed the safety and security of the five Members of Parliament (MPs) and the accompanying officer who were caught up in the Kenyan protests.
Recent reports had raised concerns about the MPs’ safety amidst the violent protests.
The delegation, visiting the Kenyan Parliament for a benchmarking visit, found themselves involved in the unfortunate incident.
In a statement released on Wednesday, June 26th, Parliament assured that the delegation was promptly “escorted and secured in the Senate building and subsequently evacuated to their hotel by Officials of the Kenyan Parliament.”
Parliament acknowledged the public’s concern and reassured that efforts are underway to ensure their safe return to Ghana.
The delegation includes members of the Local Government Committee of Parliament, namely: Hon. Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi (Chairman), Hon. Edwin Nii Lance Vanderpuye (Ranking Member), Hon. Sylvester Tetteh, Hon. Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Hon. Mohammed Taferu, and Senior Principal Assistant Clerk Anita Quartey Papafio.
The protests, initially sparked by social media discontent and gaining momentum as a grassroots movement, have escalated into widespread demonstrations across cities and towns nationwide.
Tuesday witnessed chaos in Nairobi, with protesters targeting key government buildings. The governor’s office, city hall, and the national parliament were set ablaze amid escalating tensions, beginning with a declared ‘total shutdown’ by demonstrators.
