A senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, has rejected the concept of Founders’ Day, asserting that Ghana’s history cannot be manipulated by force or imposition.
Prof. Gyampo believes that the recognition of founders should emerge through consensus and dialogue, rather than the dictates of any regime.
“History cannot be altered by force and through imposition,” he emphasized.
He contended that JB Danquah and others who opposed the efforts to found Ghana cannot be retroactively recognized as independence fighters.
Prof. Gyampo referenced a letter authored by JB Danquah to support his claims.
“We can negotiate and, by consensus, recognize the UGCC people in some capacity regarding the founding of Ghana. Until this happens, there is only one founder of Ghana,” he stated.
He emphasized that the idea of Founders’ Day can only be accepted and properly institutionalized through nationwide consensus building.
“Without consensus, what we have done to our history is temporary, as the political history of Ghana will inevitably revert to its ‘factory settings’.”
Prof. Gyampo concluded, “We must return to our history! We must recognize that the political history of Ghana will inevitably revert to its ‘factory settings’.”
