Go beyond rhetoric and fulfill his pre-election promises – Martin Amidu

Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Martin Amidu, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to go beyond rhetoric and fulfill his pre-election promises.

In an article, Mr. Amidu expressed concerns over President Mahama’s characterization of Ghana as an “economic crime scene,” stating that this was not a new development.

“I am more interested in knowing what President Mahama, while in opposition, and his minority in Parliament did concretely for Ghanaians during the period when the economy was being turned into an economic crime scene,” he remarked.

According to Mr. Amidu, every new government since 2001 has used similar rhetoric about inheriting a struggling economy, and it was time for President Mahama to focus on delivering results rather than making excuses.

“We, the people, voted for President Mahama for firm and impartial leadership—not recycled politico-economic excuses,” he emphasized.

He further cautioned against using the “economic crime scene” narrative as justification for seeking another Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) bailout or a loan from China, a trend he noted had been common among both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administrations.

Additionally, Mr. Amidu raised concerns about a “political crime scene” unfolding under Mahama’s leadership, stressing the urgent need for strong and impartial governance.

“The electorate is neither foolish nor unthinking, Mr. President… Please, brother, walk your pre-election can-do talk!” he urged.
