Government addresses issues that threatened the operations of IPP’s

The government has successfully addressed a critical issue that threatened the operations of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) by restructuring the legacy debt owed to them. This move is aimed at stabilizing electricity supply and ensuring long-term sustainability in the energy sector.

Herbert Krapa, the Minister of State responsible for the Energy Ministry, emphasized that the renegotiation of this debt will ultimately benefit Ghana. During a visit to the Accra West Regional headquarters of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Krapa urged the power distributor to swiftly address consumer complaints regarding meter acquisition and other issues to restore public confidence.

In a related development, Samuel Dubik Mahama, the Managing Director of ECG, dismissed concerns that the new smart meters being installed are designed to exploit consumers. These concerns arose after numerous complaints about the consumption rates associated with the smart meters, which are part of the Loss Reduction Programme (LRP).

Mahama reassured customers that the smart meters are intended to improve efficiency and accuracy, not to take advantage of them.
