Ghanaian icon Asamoah Gyan recently expressed deep gratitude for his recognition in Parliament, marking a significant shift from feeling undervalued for an extended period. Gyan, aged 37, officially announced his retirement during the 30th Afreximbank Annual Meeting on June 20, 2023. He concluded his remarkable career as Ghana’s leading goal scorer, with 51 goals, and the second most-capped player in the country. The football community joined in celebrating his immense contributions to the sport, and parliamentarians also took the opportunity to honor his achievements.

Gyan shared that he now feels a sense of tranquility after receiving such a warm reception upon his retirement announcement. He acknowledged he had felt insufficiently recognized in the past, facing disrespect. However, witnessing the events in Parliament has allowed him to comprehend and feel appreciated by Ghanaians. Gyan emphasized that he is unconcerned about others’ opinions, as Parliament’s acknowledgment confirms his worth and believes the public also recognizes his deserving celebration.

Reflecting on his national team absence for over four years, Gyan’s final appearance was in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
