Haruna Iddrisu: Immunity must be based on parliamentary emergency

HARUNA_IDDRISU

Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament, Tamale South MP, recently made a controversial statement regarding parliamentary immunity during emergencies. According to Iddrisu, parliamentary immunity should apply even in emergency situations.

Parliamentary immunity has been a subject of much debate in Ghanaian politics, with many arguing that it gives MPs too much power and protection from legal consequences. However, Iddrisu believes immunity is necessary to protect parliamentarians from politically motivated lawsuits.

In his recent statement, Iddrisu argued that emergency situations should not be used to strip MPs of their immunity. He cited examples of other countries where parliamentary immunity is upheld even during times of crisis.

Iddrisu’s statement has been met with criticism from some quarters, with many arguing it is an attempt to shield MPs from accountability. However, others have defended his stance, arguing that parliamentary immunity is necessary to ensure that MPs are not unduly targeted by political opponents.
