The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been accused by security analyst and Executive Director of the African Center for Security and Counterterrorism Emmanuel Mawanye Kotin, of nurturing a group of officers within the Ghana Police Service known as the ‘Dampare Boys’.’ According to Kotin, these officers do not show respect to their seniors and do not follow orders from their line commanders, except for Dr. Akuffo Dampare. This alleged situation has reportedly dampened the morale of many senior officers and caused disillusionment within the top hierarchy of the police force.
Kotin made these claims during an interview on TV3 on Tuesday, April 25, while discussing the reported shooting of a 26-year-old woman by an Inspector with a service rifle in Adum, Kumasi. He further revealed that the so-called ‘Dampare Boys’ are being rapidly promoted, contrary to the established regimen of the police service, with many promoted to the rank of Inspector.
Kotin questioned whether the IGP has the authority to create such a group of officers; and called on Parliament to summon Dr. Akuffo Dampare to answer questions about this alleged breed of officers within the police service. He also highlighted that senior officers opposed to this group of officers are often silenced and afraid to speak up.
