In response to a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has launched investigations into the deaths that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 elections, according to a report by the Chronicle Newspaper.
The report states that the IGP has assigned a specialized investigative team to the CID Headquarters, with strict deadlines to complete their work and present their findings.
Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe leads the team, which consists of highly experienced and skilled officers of the Ghana Police Service.
According to the report, the IGP assured the President that the team would be provided with all necessary resources to accomplish their mission effectively.
The investigation will build upon efforts initiated by the IGP and his team since his assumption of office in 2021. Notably, Dr. Akuffo Dampare established the Cold Case Unit at the CID Headquarters to ensure the continuous investigation of unresolved crime cases.
The report highlights that the Cold Case Unit, which has been probing the deaths linked to the 2020 elections, has made significant progress, leading to the prosecution of some suspects.
President Mahama, in a letter dated January 10, 2025, directed the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the fatalities associated with the 2020 and 2024 elections.
