Forty Chief Inspectors within the Ghana Police Service have initiated legal action against Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, alleging an unjustifiable refusal by the service to promote them. They have lodged a lawsuit with the Kumasi High Court, contending that they have been excluded from a sequence of promotions instituted by the Service to provide special amnesty to police officers who acquired degrees before 2020, after joining the force.
Despite having served for periods ranging from 25 to 30 years, the Police administration has promoted their junior colleagues under the same amnesty program but has declined to allow them entry into the Police Academy to facilitate their promotions to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
The 40 plaintiffs are, therefore, seeking a court order mandating the IGP to grant them direct admission to the Police Academy and to compensate for the income they lost as a result of the failure to promote them.
Furthermore, the IGP and three senior police officers are currently under investigation by a parliamentary committee regarding a leaked recording in which the police officers are allegedly heard conspiring to remove him from his position. Both the IGP and his accusers have already appeared before this committee.
