IMF approves Ghana’s $3billion bailout

Ghana has successfully obtained the much-awaited financial support of $3 billion from the IMF. Today, on May 17, 2023, the IMF’s Executive Board met in Washington and unanimously approved Ghana’s program for the next three years.

The IMF announced a virtual press conference on Thursday, May 18, to brief journalists on the outcomes of the Executive Board meeting regarding Ghana’s request for an Extended Credit Facility (ECF) Arrangement. Prominent participants in the press briefing include Stephane Roudet, the IMF Mission Chief for Ghana; Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s Minister of Finance; Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana; and Tatiana Mossot, Senior Communications Officer at the IMF.

The eagerly anticipated press conference aims to clarify the discussions held during the IMF Executive Board meeting and the decisions made concerning Ghana’s request for an Extended Credit Facility Arrangement. This format, conducted virtually through Zoom, enables journalists and stakeholders to interact with the panel of experts and understand IMF’s perspective on Ghana’s economic situation and the proposed help.

During the press conference, Ghana’s Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, and Governor Ernest Addison are expected to share insights on the country’s economic challenges, reform efforts, and the potential impact of the Extended Credit Facility Arrangement on Ghana’s financial stability and economic growth prospects.
