Former South African President Jacob Zuma, currently incarcerated, has recently undergone surgery and remains hospitalized, according to prison authorities. Singabakho Nxumalo, the spokesperson for the correctional services department, confirmed that Zuma is scheduled for additional medical procedures in the coming days.

Details regarding the nature of the surgeries and Zuma’s anticipated discharge date have not been disclosed.

Jacob Zuma commenced his 15-month prison sentence in July, having been convicted of contempt of court for his failure to participate in an inquiry investigating allegations of corruption during his presidency from 2009 to 2018. His hospitalization has resulted in the postponement of a separate corruption trial that was set to begin last week. This trial is related to a $5 billion (£3 billion) arms deal from the 1990s, and Zuma maintains that the charges against him are politically motivated. He has pleaded not guilty to all 16 counts, which include charges of racketeering, corruption, fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering.
