The Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, has been flown out to Canada for urgent medical attention, rendering him unable to appear in court. Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata, Gyakye Quayson’s lawyer, informed the Accra High Court, where the MP faces charges of alleged perjury and forgery related to his acquisition of a Ghanaian passport.

Tsatsu Tsikata explained to the judge that Gyakye Quayson’s absence was due to a compelling health emergency, and he provided the court with a medical note during a hearing in chambers. The lawyer emphasized the confidential nature of Gyakye Quayson’s medical situation and stated that they had requested the closed-door hearing.

Concerning a previous court session on November 3, Tsatsu Tsikata expressed surprise at the court’s sitting, noting that neither the accused nor the lawyers were aware of it. He mentioned that they had notified the court in advance, proposing November 17, 2023, as the preferred date, but they received no response.

Despite Tsatsu Tsikata’s explanations and the assurance of providing detailed information from Canadian doctors about Gyakye Quayson’s medical condition, Justice Mary Yanzuh, the presiding judge, instructed Mr. Tsikata to proceed with cross-examining a witness, Richard Tachie Mensah.
