Jean Mensa to Brief Parliament on Ablekuma North Electoral Dispute

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, is expected to appear before Parliament this week to address the ongoing electoral impasse in the Ablekuma North Constituency, where parliamentary representation has been stalled for over six months.

The December 7, 2024, general elections in the constituency ended in controversy following disputes during the collation of results from multiple polling centres. As a result, no Member of Parliament has been declared for the area, leaving residents without formal representation in Parliament.

The prolonged uncertainty has raised concerns among both lawmakers and constituents. On June 4, the Minority in Parliament formally petitioned the Ghana Police Service, calling for adequate security to ensure a peaceful and transparent re-collation process.

Jean Mensa is scheduled to appear before Parliament’s Committee of the Whole to update Members of Parliament (MPs) on efforts to resolve the impasse. MPs are expected to demand clarity on the Commission’s plans and press for a definitive timeline for concluding the process.

Several Minority MPs have criticized the delay, describing it as unnecessary and harmful to democratic accountability.

The EC has not yet announced a final outcome for the constituency, fueling broader concerns about electoral transparency and public confidence in the Commission.

Ms. Mensa’s appearance is expected to provide insight into the challenges faced during the collation process, actions taken thus far, and the roadmap toward delivering a fair and credible resolution.
