Ghana’s economy has been struggling because of the high debt burden and the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on global trade and investment. The government has been working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to receive balance of payment support. It is also seeking debt relief from the Paris Club.

At a joint press conference with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, US Vice President Kamala Harris mentioned that the US government would support Ghana’s efforts to get debt forgiveness from the Paris Club. She also stated that the US would help Ghana in overcoming its economic challenges.

Vice President Harris assured Ghanaians of their willingness to support Ghanaians to receive the debt relief and ensure the country recovers and thrives.

President Akufo-Addo on his part thanked the US government’s support, stating that he is grateful for the solidarity shown by the United States in our quest to build a resilient and self-reliant economy.
