Komenda Sugar Factory needs to be operationalized

Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister-Designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, has underscored the urgent need to revive the Komenda Sugar Factory to benefit the people of Ghana.

A major obstacle hindering the factory’s operations has been the persistent lack of raw materials, which has rendered it dormant.

During her appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 22, Ofosu-Adjare highlighted the importance of revitalizing the factory as a crucial step in reducing the country’s reliance on sugar imports.

“I have been informed that the Komenda Sugar Factory is currently not operational, with one of the primary challenges being the lack of raw materials to sustain production, along with some missing parts.”

She further noted that funds had been allocated to address these issues and stressed the need for a thorough evaluation to determine the factory’s overall condition.

“It is clear that we need the factory to function for the benefit of Ghanaians, as we currently import approximately half a billion dollars’ worth of sugar annually. Once I assume office, I will collaborate with the ministry to assess the factory’s condition and ensure that Ghana reaps the benefits of this monumental project,” she assured.
