Professor Eliasu Alhassan has issued a warning that the public will not passively witness the appropriation of public property by self-serving individuals. He made this statement in the context of the legal dispute between the Ambariya Islamic Institute and the family of the late Dr. Abubakari Alhassan concerning the ownership of the Technical University College of Tamale.
According to Professor Eliasu Alhassan, the land was originally acquired by the Ambariya Islamic Institute for educational purposes and not to cater to the interests of any specific individual.
The leadership of the Ambariya Islamic Institute has urged the general public to dismiss reports suggesting that the state and the institute lost the court case over the ownership of the Ambariya Senior High School and the Technical University College of Tamale.
The Institute filed a civil case against the late Dr. Abubakari Alhassan, a former consultant to the institution, after he claimed ownership of the lands and buildings of the Technical University College of Tamale, where the Ambariya Senior High School, a government school, is also located.
The son of the late Dr. Abubakari Alhassan, Nuhu Abubakari Gushee-Naa, was arrested on December 15, 2023, for carrying an M-16 assault rifle with six loaded magazines and a 40-round pistol when he visited the school, shocking the community.
Professor Eliasu Alhassan, the Dean of Social Sciences at the University for Development Studies, expressed determination that Ambariya and the public would follow the case to its conclusion to ensure that public interest prevails over individual interests.
Abubakr Kassim Shuaib, a teacher at Anbariya Islamic Institute, expressed surprise at the frequent attacks on teachers and students of the Ambariya Senior High School and called on the public to show interest in the case to ensure justice prevails. He also commended the Ambariya Islamic Institute for resorting to legal channels instead of taking matters into their own hands.
Sheikh Abdul-Sami Issah Iddris, the Deputy General Secretary of the Ambariya Islamic Institute, questioned why someone would label the school as a terrorist organization when its sole purpose is the development and well-being of individuals in Ghana and beyond.
The presiding judge of the Tamale District Court, Justice Amadu Issifu, adjourned the case to March 11, 2024. It will be transferred to the High Court for further prosecution and judgment. Efforts to reach the lawyer of Nuhu Abubakari Gushee-Naa for comments were unsuccessful.
