Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has warned against lobbying for the running mate position, calling it “disrespectful” to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In an interview on Accra-based Citi FM, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful emphasized that the flagbearer should have the freedom to choose his running mate without external pressure, stating that she is not interested in lobbying for the position.

“I think it’s even disrespectful for people to be lobbying as if he (Bawumia) can’t make a choice,” she remarked.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, who serves as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, has consistently advocated for both leading political parties – the NPP and NDC – to implement policies that promote female participation in politics by fielding women in their strongholds and ensuring their election to Parliament.

When asked about her name being mentioned as a potential running mate, she firmly responded, “I am absolutely against any act of seeking such a position. It is an appointed role, and I believe the flagbearer should decide who he thinks can best partner him in both the elections and governance.”

She added, “People may speculate, but I, Ursula Owusu, haven’t told anyone that I am interested in any position. If the flagbearer, in his wisdom, believes I can assist him in this capacity, then why not? But I am certainly not putting myself forward.”

Regarding whether she feels the need to address media speculation about her as a possible running mate, she clarified, “No media person can ever say that I have contacted them to promote my name, nor has anyone else done so on my behalf.”
