MP for Agona West in the Central Region criticizes Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the MP for Agona West in the Central Region, has criticized Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who also leads the NPP side in Parliament, for allegedly paying constituents in Agona West to transfer their votes to Effutu. Morrison, who is contesting as an independent candidate for the December 7 elections, expressed frustration over the practice, saying it undermines her efforts to advocate for Agona West’s elevation to municipal status or its division into two districts.

She claims that Afenyo-Markin offers GHC 1,000 per voter to relocate their votes from Agona West to Effutu, creating a population deficit that complicates her push for development. The Agona West District, she notes, has 31 electoral areas, significantly more than neighboring districts like Effutu, which has only 18 electoral areas. Morrison has called upon local chiefs and Agona West residents to stand against this practice.

In response, Afenyo-Markin’s office has denied these allegations, clarifying that a meeting with NPP parliamentary candidates from the Central Region was held to discuss the voter transfer process. They asserted that voters from other constituencies would not be permitted to transfer their votes to Winneba. However, Afenyo-Markin’s office has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
