Naval forces from West Africa and international partners have conducted simulation exercises to combat violent extremism and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
The exercises, codenamed Obangame Express 2024 and Flintlock, brought together personnel from 13 nations, including the USA, Ghana, and the Netherlands, to train in maritime security procedures and counter-terrorism tactics. Junior Grade Daniel Ehrlich, spokesperson for Obangame Express 2024, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing the threats posed by terrorists and pirates in the region.
Major Adam Denarco, the lead planner of exercise Flintlock, highlighted the necessity of partnerships in enhancing operational capabilities and countering the intense activities of terrorists and pirates in the Gulf of Guinea.
The exercises aimed to bolster the capacity of West African navies to respond to security threats and promote regional cooperation in combating violent extremism. The Gulf of Guinea has been a hotspot for piracy and terrorist activities, and the international community has pledged to support regional efforts to address these security challenges.
These exercises demonstrate the commitment of West African nations and their international partners to ensuring the security of the region’s waters and combating the scourge of violent extremism.
