Controversial North West businessman and political fixer Brown Mogotsi was arrested on Friday, May 15, 2026, over allegations that he orchestrated a fake assassination attempt against himself in Vosloorus in November 2025.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), a multidisciplinary law enforcement team executed a J50 warrant leading to Mogotsi’s arrest on charges related to defeating the ends of justice. SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed the arrest and indicated that investigators believe the incident was deliberately staged.
The case stems from an incident in November 2025 when Mogotsi reported that his Chevrolet vehicle had been ambushed in Vosloorus and struck by 11 bullets in what he described as an assassination attempt. However, forensic investigations reportedly raised major inconsistencies in his account. Ballistics experts found that although several bullets penetrated the vehicle’s front seats, no blood traces were discovered inside the car. Investigators also obtained witness testimony from a local resident who allegedly claimed to have seen Mogotsi firing at his own vehicle.
Police further revealed that preliminary ballistic testing linked the firearm recovered from the incident to other violent crimes currently under investigation, including murder and attempted murder cases.
In addition to the charge of defeating the ends of justice, Mogotsi is reportedly facing several other charges, including possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and discharging a firearm within a municipal area.
The arrest came only hours after Mogotsi completed explosive testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating allegations of political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system. During his appearance before the commission, Mogotsi repeatedly clashed with evidence leaders and invoked his constitutional right against self-incrimination on multiple occasions.
His lawyer, Makau William Sekgatja, criticized the timing of the arrest, describing it as shocking and potentially retaliatory. The defense maintains Mogotsi’s innocence and has indicated it is considering legal action against the state for what it describes as malicious prosecution and unlawful arrest.
Mogotsi remains in police custody and is expected to make his first court appearance at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court today, May 18, 2026.
