The United States Embassy in Ghana has introduced new measures to make the visa application process easier for Ghanaian travelers planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The changes are aimed at reducing delays and ensuring that football fans, journalists, and tourists can travel to the tournament without unnecessary obstacles.
One of the most significant improvements is the dramatic reduction in visa interview wait times. According to embassy officials, wait times for B1/B2 visitor visas have dropped from about 15 months in 2024 to less than one week as of March 2026. The improvement follows an increase in consular staffing and expanded visa processing capacity.
The embassy has also introduced a special system known as the FIFA Prioritized Appointment Scheduling System, commonly referred to as FIFA PASS. The system allows fans who have verified match tickets purchased directly through FIFA to request priority scheduling for their visa interviews. This initiative is intended to ensure that legitimate ticket holders are able to complete the visa process in time for the tournament.
To further support travel demand ahead of the global football event, the embassy has released more than 2,000 additional non-immigrant visa appointment slots. These slots are specifically intended to help Ghanaians traveling to attend matches or related activities during the World Cup.
Another key development is the availability of multiple-entry visas for Ghanaian travelers. Following bilateral discussions between the governments of Ghana and the United States, applicants may now receive visas that allow them to travel between the three host nations—the United States, Canada, and Mexico—throughout the tournament period.
Applicants who plan to attend the World Cup must still follow the standard visa application procedures. Travelers and fans are required to apply for a B1/B2 visitor visa, while journalists covering the event must apply for an I-class media visa. The process includes completing the DS-160 online application form and paying a non-refundable visa fee of $185.
The embassy also emphasizes the importance of demonstrating strong ties to Ghana during the visa interview. Applicants must provide credible reasons for travel and evidence that they intend to return home after their visit, a requirement under Section 214B of U.S. immigration law.
Officials have warned applicants to avoid using unauthorized visa agents who claim to guarantee visa approvals. The embassy cautions that submitting fraudulent documents can result in permanent visa bans.
Travelers are also reminded that possessing a World Cup match ticket does not guarantee visa approval. Applicants are advised not to purchase non-refundable flight tickets until their visa has been granted. In addition, visitors must strictly comply with the duration of stay granted by immigration officials at the port of entry, as overstaying a visa can lead to long-term travel restrictions and affect future visa applications.
