The tragic killing of 18-year-old Dwight “DJ” Grant shocked the South Florida community after investigators revealed that surveillance cameras captured key moments leading up to and following the fatal attack.

Grant, a senior at Miramar High School, was killed on October 17, 2021, in what prosecutors described as a premeditated ambush carried out by three teenagers at an apartment complex in Miramar, Florida. Authorities allege that the suspects planned the attack in advance, lured Grant into a secluded location, and later attempted to conceal evidence of the crime.

According to court documents and police affidavits, the attack involved a 17-year-old male suspect, his 17-year-old girlfriend, and a 16-year-old female accomplice.

Investigators recovered text messages that prosecutors say demonstrated planning prior to the incident. Among the messages cited in court filings was one in which the male suspect allegedly indicated that violence was imminent.

Authorities claim the female suspect subsequently contacted Grant and persuaded him to meet her at the apartment complex, drawing him into what investigators later described as a planned trap.

The case drew significant attention because of the extensive surveillance footage reportedly obtained from cameras throughout the apartment complex.

According to the Miramar Police Department, video evidence showed the suspects waiting near a stairwell before confronting Grant. Investigators allege that the group cornered him against a wall and attacked him.

Court records indicate that Grant attempted to defend himself during the struggle. Prosecutors allege that the confrontation escalated into a fatal assault that resulted in multiple stab wounds.

The surveillance footage became a central piece of evidence in the investigation, helping detectives reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the killing.

Investigators allege that after the attack, the suspects attempted to hide evidence and delay discovery of the crime.

According to police affidavits, surveillance cameras captured individuals moving Grant’s body from the stairwell area and transporting it to a nearby location where it was later found. Authorities also alleged that the suspects attempted to clean bloodstains and destroy clothing connected to the incident.

Grant’s body was discovered two days later, prompting a homicide investigation that quickly focused on the three teenagers.

Prosecutors stated that the motive behind the attack stemmed from a personal conflict involving relationships and jealousy.

Investigators alleged that tensions had developed between Grant and the male suspect over a previous romantic or sexual relationship involving a young woman connected to the case.

Authorities argued that the dispute ultimately escalated into a planned act of violence.

Given the alleged premeditated nature of the crime, the Broward State Attorney’s Office sought to prosecute all three defendants as adults.

The suspects were formally charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy-related offenses, and evidence-tampering charges connected to the investigation.

The case proceeded through the Florida court system, with prosecutors maintaining that the evidence demonstrated careful planning and coordination among the defendants.

In the years following the killing, legal proceedings continued as defense attorneys challenged various aspects of the prosecution’s case, including procedural and technical issues related to the indictments.

The case remained closely followed due to the seriousness of the allegations, the age of the defendants, and the extensive surveillance evidence cited by investigators.

For Grant’s family, friends, and classmates, the tragedy remains a painful reminder of a young life cut short and a case that continues to resonate throughout the South Florida community.
